ABOUT US

We are an environmental conservation organization dedicated to restoring, enhancing and preserving wetlands throughout the Lower Toussaint River. Covering more than 22,000 acres in the lower 13 miles of the river, TRWC focuses on nurturing optional habitat for wildlife and migrating waterfowl plus filtering nutrients from run-off to assure clean water delivery to Lake Erie.

GREAT BLACK SWAMP

The Toussaint River Watershed Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, inviting philanthropic support from donors who in turn enjoy tax deductibility for their generosity. Founded in 2020 by members of the historic Toussaint Shooting Club, TRWC is positioned to identify, fund and initiate projects with the greatest environmental impact throughout the watershed. The existing marshes represent the only remnants of the once famous “Great Black Swamp”, which dominated almost 1,500 square miles of northwest Ohio. Unfortunately, the forests were cleared and the land drained for agricultural uses. Any further loss of today’s wetlands severely jeopardizes the ability to deliver clean water to Lake Erie, let alone preserve the natural habitat so critically important to wildlife.
